Hello thrifties! If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thrilled that spring has finally arrived after what seemed like an endless winter. Spring marks the unofficial start of yard sale season in the northeast, and I’m absolutely excited to get out of the house and uncover some amazing, budget-friendly treasures!

I've been diving into sales here and there over the past few weeks, and I've even hit up some community sales, which I seek out! Why? Because there's a fantastic concentration of sales in one area, but it also means more competition! Community sales are an awesome way to get out, enjoy some exercise, and cover more ground, especially if you have an "escort." That's my fun nickname for Mr. Thrifty! An escort's job is to drop you off, keep an eye on you, and move the car up as you shop so you never have to backtrack! Plus, he pops the trunk and serves as an extra set of eyes for spotting sales along the route and helping load and secure large items. His reward for all this hard work? Lunch is on me, plus endless snacks from the lemonade and food stands we encounter along the way.
If you're a fan of community sales, you're going to be thrilled by town-wide and multi-mile sales! I'm always on the lookout and ready to travel for a town-wide sale. Here in Landisville, PA, where I live, we host two spectacular sales each year—on Memorial Day and Labor Day. When I was house hunting, these events were a major factor in my decision to buy my current home. The sale not only covers the entire town of Landisville but also nearby Salunga, plus there's an enormous flea market in the local park, complete with food trucks and vendors. Local businesses generously offer their lots for sales setups, and private homeowners often lend or rent out their yards and porches for the event. Over the years, many of my friends have successfully set up and sold items right from my property!

Every Memorial Day, I enjoyed immersing myself in the excitement of organizing my own yard sale. It was such an antipated event at my house and I never walked away with less than $300 from any sale, all by clearing out items my family no longer needed. The bulk of my items were clothing, as this was long before I ventured into purchasing items specifically to resell. I would display everything on massive 9’ church tables generously on long term loan by a friend (she needed storage, I needed tables, win-win), and offered every piece of clothing for just 50 cents. The fact that I consistently made over $300 selling items at just 50 cents each proves that I might be on the verge of being a hoarder, have a shopping addiction, or perhaps both! Pricing everything this way was a genius move—it saved time, cut costs on supplies, and made calculations a breeze! Plus, who’s going to haggle over a 50-cent item? Some years, I’d pack up leftover items for future sales, while other times I’d donate or leave out for free, depending on my mood that day.
Although I stopped hosting yard sales a few years back due to storage challenges and the wear and tear on Mr. Thrifty from lugging those hefty church tables up and down to the basement, I’m still 100% in the game as a shopper at these sales.
The sale is so popular that you'll often see dealers cruising the neighborhood the weekend before, hoping to snag the goodies before the big day. People from all over flock to this sale, including the Amish, who hire drivers and come with trailers to scoop up baby items and kitchenware. And here's the best part: at the end of the sale, many of us (myself included) give away the remaining items for free! So, even if you're busy during the day, you can drive around until early evening and grab all the fantastic freebies. Even though I no longer host a sale, I still fill my front yard with free items—it's the quickest and easiest way to clear out stuff without the hassle of boxing it up and taking it to a donation center. Works like a charm!
If you're excited to shop the sale, or set up a stand of your own, here are the details! Remember, this is a TOWN WIDE SALE, and the flea market in the park is an amazing bonus!

If you’re having a yard sale of your own, follow my tips and tricks to make it a success. Gather up those unwanted items, grab a few tables or blankets, and you're ready to roll with just a few essentials. The most successful yard sales are organized and clearly priced. Organization can be as simple as a box of same-size clothing, and pricing can be done with a straightforward sign (e.g., pants $1, shirts $0.50). Avoid the hassle of making people ask for prices; you'll be bombarded and lose sales, but be prepared to haggle!
✨PRO TIP: Even if the community is advertising the sale, make sure to promote your own as well. Always PROVIDE AN ADDRESS. It's frustrating to see multiple listings for a community sale with only the development name mentioned. By providing your address and stating that you're part of the community sale, you'll likely attract more visitors. Those unfamiliar with the area will enter your address into their GPS, ensuring they visit your sale first!
Get the buzz going about your sale on Facebook—create an event and post in yard sale groups. Don't forget to advertise on Craigslist, popular yard sale apps, and the local newspaper. These are the ultimate hotspots for yard sale enthusiasts mapping out their weekend treasure hunts.
Design attention-grabbing signs, social media posts, and flyers at no cost with Canva.
If your neighborhood is hosting a community sale, dive right in—more sales in one area attract more potential buyers and boost your earnings!

✨PRO TIP: Make sure you have plenty of change and keep it handy! Since ATMs only dispense $20 bills, be prepared. Keep valuable items close to your "checkout" area to prevent theft—yes, it happens, and I've experienced it myself! Save up those plastic grocery bags in the weeks leading up to your sale; you'll definitely need them. And don't forget the sunscreen!
While I never miss my own town's sale, I don't stop there—I hunt down citywide sales wherever they pop up, and I'm more than willing to travel to another state for an incredible deal! The best tools I've discovered for finding these sales are through Facebook Marketplace—both events and groups like the PA Community Yard Sale Group, Craigslist, and the local newspaper. Even when I'm on vacation, I make it a point to check out the local newspaper for sale listings. In fact, next weekend marks my very first adventure to the Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale in New Jersey—it's the biggest and longest-running sale in the state! Make sure to hit that subscribe button on Facebook, IG, and this blog, as I'll be sharing my top tips and showcasing highlights from the sale. You definitely don't want to miss out!
Take your shopping adventures to the next level with multi-mile sales like PA's thrilling 100-mile sale and Virginia's exciting RT 43 yard crawl! These incredible events are just a taste of the countless sales happening nationwide, and I can't wait to explore a new one each year. They're all building up my excitement for the ultimate bucket list trip: shopping at the 127 sale, the largest in the US! I'm so ready!!
